Self care - Part 1

Self-care is a HUGE buzz word right now. I see a lot of people using #selfcare everywhere. Although its awesome that people are being more purposeful about caring for themselves, I think it's important to question, "what is the reason behind the self-care?". Hear me out. Woman A religiously goes to the nail salon every two weeks to get her nails done because there is no way in hell that she will go out in public with unkempt nails. Having unpolished nails is like leaving the house naked! She doesn't feel put together if she doesn't have them done. She is getting her nails done because that is her baseline for beauty. She does this in order to feel beautiful.

Woman B goes to the nail salon regularly as well. She loves having her nails done as a treat for herself and loves the experience of being at the salon for some "me time". If her nails don't get done some weeks, she is OK with that. She still feels good regardless. She is getting her nails done in order to enjoy the experience and treat herself. She goes because it's something she does just for herself and no one else. It makes her feel good.

I've given these 2 scenarios with no judgement at all... just to point out that you already have everything you need within you. I sometimes worry (as we all see) beauty standards being raised higher and higher. First, it was makeup, then we added nails, now it's eyelash extensions. I see women going broke just so they can keep up with these beauty trends and it seems like it could be exhausting! You truly do have everything you need. You are beautiful just as you are. If you want to get your nails, hair and eyelashes done, go for it girl! BUT please do it for YOU and know that you don't need to keep up with any "beauty standard" for anyone. You are perfect just the way you are.

So the next time you go to do some self-care, ask yourself, "Am I doing this for the enjoyment or am I doing it in order to feel beautiful, smart, good enough, etc.?

Here are the first 4 (of 10) ways you can care for yourself in a way that honours your innate beauty:

1. Listen to your body: Are you aware of the messages your body is sending you on a daily basis? If not, you can start to become aware of this! Some messages are loud and clear (like a sudden injury) but more often than not, these messages are subtle. The more in tune we are with our physical body, the easier it becomes to read these signs.

2. Eat what makes your body feel good. Eating well is our best defense against illness. There are so many foods out there today that have little to no nutrients and thus become fillers for our body. We can sometimes get stuck in patterns of filling our bodies with nutrient-poor foods, leaving no room for nutrient-dense foods. Fresh is best when it comes to nutrition! Go for locally sourced produce grown without pesticides or chemicals, reduce artificial and refined sugar, unhealthy fats, and foods that contain preservatives. It doesn’t need to be complicated. Fast food is not likely to be good for you and you probably know this by the way your body reacts after your meal. Nothing beats a home-cooked meal.

3. Clean up your environment. Keep an eye open for everything that is toxic in your life. This means air pollution, cleaning products, personal care products, relationships, and even thoughts! We ingest toxins when we don’t pay attention to what we eat, or consciously when we indulge in drugs or alcohol. This is usually a simple fix, but the hard part comes in our attachment to habitual patterns. Taking care of yourself means eliminating or reducing toxins from your body, environment, relationships and emotional state.

4. Get regular exercise. There are so many studies linking good health to regular exercise that most of us are pretty aware we need to move regularly if we want to practice self-care. Just get in a routine that feels manageable – not too hard, not too soft – and stick with it. Bonus points if you get outdoors to reconnect with nature as you exercise.
